Working With the 960 Grid System

Hello. I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted, and I will try to get better. The first two months of the year have been very good, and I am working hard. With that comes the opportunity to learn new things. One thing that I am playing around with lately is the 960 Grid System.  As I have had some rapid turnaround sites lately, I have implemented this cool prototyping and design tool.  I have found it to be cross-browser compliant, and really easy to add to and edit later (which saves tons of time in the long run).

Visit the site here, and be sure to check out the great demo, as well as the portfolio of sites done with the 960 Grid System.  Implementing it is as easy as linking the CSS files in the <head> of your site, and abiding by their <div> rules.  You’ll be designing and coding with it in minutes.

Now, there are some drawbacks to the Grid System.  For instance, spacing is rigid so if you’re not careful your sites can become a bit similar.  The rigidity also does limit design to a degree.  I don’t know if anyone else has experienced this with the 960 GS, but when I mix it with WordPress, Google indexes it significantly slower.  Not sure if it has something to do with the code or not.  I have only had this issue with sites done using the GS.

Anyways, download it and play around with the sketch sheets and layered PSDs.  Enjoy!
